KATHERINE NOLAN

ARTIST STATEMENT

My video work is documented performance and explores the female subject’s narcissistic relationship to the camera, testing its potential as a strategy of subversive pleasure. The normative pleasures of the feminine masquerade position the female as conventionally narcissistic, however her desire for the gaze of the camera and viewer begins to trouble the pictorial and temporal space of the representation. I am currently pursuing a practice-led PhD entitled Seducing the Machine: Narcissism and Performance in Contemporary Feminist Practice at the University for the Creative Arts, Surrey. My previous education: MA Goldsmiths College, London (02-03) BA DIT, Dublin (97-01).

Exhibitions and Festivals include: Trans:positions [Simultan05] in Timisoara, Romania (209); OPA 0.2 Second International Festival (On Performance Art) in Athens, Greece (2009); Unpicked and Dismantled, The British Narrow Examination of the Kaunas Art Biennale: Textile 07, Lithuania (2007); Trans-Cabaret at Geisha Lounge, Nottingham UK; Engendered Species at The Gatov gallery at CSULB and & The Advocate Gallery, Hollywood, US (2006).I have also co-curated Visual Deflections a showcase international video art at The Roxy, London (2007); and Knowing Through Making doctoral exhibition and conference, at UCA Surrey.
