Like the motely garb of the court fools of the Middle Ages, the tools of modern life often seemed contrived to deflect our attention from the truth, both shielding and concealing us.
The artists, designers and illustrators taking part in MART’s 2016 members exhibition have each attempted to respond to this year’s curatorial quest to offer work that accepts the agency to perform self-determining acts. Studio members examine the concept of control, agency and self-will, from the burgeoning Artificial Intelligence of Seamus Bradley’s poetry composing software, using Tweets as source material, to the capturing of the daily news in Nessa Finnegans impressionistic drawings. This miscellany of objects, paintings, drawing and multi-media trifles with the litany of possibilities to decide who we are and what we are capable of.
This year Independent Curator, Writer and Researcher Anne Mullee is working with MART to select works from its members, including visual artists, musicians and filmmakers.
About the MART 2016 Programme
MART firmly believes in the self-determining artist and art organisation as vital societal and cultural catalyst. It is also a provocation on the role of action in the production of identities; individual and collective, local and global. Constructing culture as action, this framework asks artists to reflect not on what art is, but what art does. With this in mind, creative and conceptual risk-taking is proposed as a key strategy in the production of knowledge that can lead to the possibility of being self-determining.
