Here Me Now
Stephanie Dowda (US) |Fiona Cashell (IRL) | Rima Otilia Qvale (NOR)
Curated by Talia Moscovitz
MART is proud to present the launch of Here Me Now, a new, evolving international multi-media exhibition and workshop series that questions the myth of national identity and the vocabulary of ‘coming from’, beyond the binary of ‘either / or’ and towards the ‘both / and’ of modern cross-pollenated identities.
Taking inspiration from Taiye Selasi’s 2014 TED talk ‘Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From,
Ask Me Where I’m Local’ three international multi-media artists will produce new art work in response to Selasi’s ideas that cultural identity is better understood through individual examination of what she calls the three R’s (Rituals, Relationships, and Restrictions) to conceptually explore the complex terrain between personal history and global identity.
Rima Otilia Qvale plans to investigate the ‘Raet,’ a geological phenomenon from the last ice age where the ice pulled back along a swath across Scandinavia, depositing rock and other materials along its path. Qvale plans to work with photography, video installation, recorded song and sculptural installation to expose the presence of the landscape and its connection to her family history.
Stephanie Dowda is producing work that explores the personal loss and death of a loved one through the lens of the Voyager satellite’s orbit and eventual disappearance in our solar system. While Fiona Cashell will use silk prints and video installation to produce work that examine the layers of contemporary Irish heritage and migration.
