MART is proud to present “Composition”, a new video work by Terence Erraught.
In an era of instant digital media distribution, brutal violence appears to have become part of our daily routine, with audiences becoming increasingly desensitized. In this video, the artist has positioned the work from an empathic perspective in order to tackle this ongoing concern, by physically manifesting into each of the constituent characters and situations in the video work. Using a primitive, ritualistic approach, Erraught attempts to connect with each event as it occurs and enter the psyche of those represented in the performance. In this instance, the artist draws on his own personal experiences in order to portray true depth of character. This process is further heightened by a series of montages featuring current newspaper coated costumes. This confronts the ambiguity and difficulty associated by engaging with events that appear hyperreal and often inconceivable to many, as they are often seen in the opposing intangible digital realm and tangible print formats alike.
This work is a durational digital video painting, rather than an episodic performance, which contains references to multiple events in recent times.
With special thanks to David Bailey for producing the sound.
