SAMANTHA MCGAHON
Artists statement
Samantha McGahon explores the possibilities of light installations through temporary interventions in site specific locations for example shop fronts, unoccupied or abandoned buildings. Interacting material and light to transform the perception of space by creating light installations to alter the perspective of the viewer of built or non-built environments.
My initial lighting design products felt difficult in its limited ability to express certain ideas of memory, space and time. Substituting product design for installation work I began to explore how light effects different materials coupled with my ability to visualise these ideas using natural or man-made light that I feel makes for a richer experience of light.
Selecting everyday commonplace materials that can accommodate light altering properties, changing the primary use while being receptive to the narrative development of time and space I considered the typologies and vernacular of rooms and spaces.
