EMANUEL ROHSS

VIDEO STILLS

ARTIST STATEMENT

The point of departure in my work Suburban Genesis is the development of modernistic architecture. I’m interested in the ideals of building and city planning from the midst 20th century. I’m drawn to the strong belief in the future that is significant for the architectural work from the era.

The movement spread over the world during the 20th century and got a stronghold in many urban and suburban environments in post-war northern Europe. The Swedish million – program, which lasted for 10 years during the 60s and 70s, generated one million new housing opportunities.

The video work interrogates the relationship between a million – program like architecture and the surrounding landscape. Emerging out of a snow mass in a quite desolate landscape the work reinforces a sense of displacement of suburban million – programme sites.

I’m drawn to the relationship between science and art within modernism. How art and architecture embraced the new technology and how it’s expression to a large extent was a tribute that technology. The idea of the building as a machine to live in is captivating but nevertheless scary. Are there aspects of an individuals needs that are missing out or can’t be fulfilled by this idea?

I see the architects work as a manifestation of power, which as a consequence of its position governs people. The concurrence between technology and function became an ideology that blinded the creators from seeing the real needs of people.

As it refers to a local architectural expression Suburban Genesis has an autobiographical nature. I spent my childhood in a million – programme building and are therefore indoctrinated since birth with the aesthetics of functionalism.
