About

MART is an artist initiative set up by Matthew Nevin and Ciara Scanlan in 2006, from this its humble beginnings it has grown into Ireland’s largest video art library and collection of active Irish Visual Artists.

Our Primary aim is to create a platform for New Media, Installation, Sculpture, Experimental Film, and Performance artists to showcase their work and provide an Art resource that is accessible, interesting and enjoyable to the public.

MART was founded on an inclusive ethos, which aims to break down boundaries in the Visual Arts through its ability to inspire a curiosity for knowledge. We want to bring contemporary art to the forefront of culture by actively engaging people from all sectors of society in both its viewing and production.

To accomplish this MART actively encourages public participation through workshops, talks and discussion around exhibitions and artist led events held in both contemporary galleries and within accessible temporary locations.

MART hosts an online interactive gallery, with informative educational text as a way into or enriching an understanding of experimental and challenging artwork. This growing site showcases over 150 of the finest of emerging, mid-level and accomplished artists, making the heart of the sometimes insular art scene publicly accessible.

MART also acts as platform and support group for individual artists. Artists can seek advice and assistance on hosting their own exhibition in relation to promotion, location etc. MART encourages a sense of connection with other artists in the initiative as a support network. We have supported the work of over 300 artists through our previous exhibitions and events.

MART specialises in International exhibitions of Irish artists. Through its five years of existence MART has reached over 1 million people through its extensive press portfolio and an audience of over 30,000 through several exhibitions across Galway, Limerick and Dublin in Ireland, London in the UK and several cities across central and eastern Europe and North America.

In 2010 MART held ‘An Instructional’ a 6 city touring exhibition sponsored by Culture Ireland. The exhibition visited: Norway, UK, Germany, Slovakia, Dublin and ends in November in Jackson, Mississippi.

In early 2011, MART launched MART Productions, which shall produce and promote Artists working in Documentary, Music Video and other main stream Media Formats. Its first experimental feature length documentary was ‘The Gypsy Soul Disco’ directed by Nicky Larkin.

In the summer of 2011, MART took part in Imagine Ireland, a year long festival of events in the USA sponsored by Culture Ireland. MART’s Invite or Reject exhibition showed in Popup Loop in Chicago, Flux Factory in New York and C4 Gallery in Los Angeles.

For 2012 MART plans on setting up an office and gallery in Dublin to begin servicing the Dublin Art community through local, national and international endeavours.
